You Need French Driver's License but have no Money
Yes, the law allows you to drive vehicles even if
you don't get a French driver's license. In this case, you can only
sit in the driver's seat in a special car that does not accelerate to more than
60 km per hour. By the way, such cars are becoming very popular and in demand.
In France there are nearly 700,000 people without a license.
If you carry a national and residential permit
One year after obtaining a residence permit, all
foreigners must change their national license to a French license.
The exchange is legal if you have obtained a national driver's license before
obtaining a residential permit.
To get a French driver's license, you will need to apply to your prefecture, where you will be given an application form. The completed form must be accompanied by a copy of the residence permit, a colour copy of a valid driver's license, and a certificate from the National Traffic Police that issued this certificate, stating that it is valid (a translation of the French language certificate must be attached).
If the first step, your documents will get approved and you'll receive another letter after about 2-3 weeks with a new list of documents - which may vary slightly in each case, but usually contain the following documents:
- two
photographs,
- a copy
of the residence permit,
- original
and transfer of title,
- Original
and translation of certificates from the National Traffic Police (issued
in advance),
- documents
confirming residence in France,
- medical
certificates,
- application
forms.
You have to fill in the last one, get everything ready and go to the prefecture. If the prefectural officer is satisfied with your documents, the applicant for a French driver's license change will be notified and will receive his driver's license by post within 2-3 weeks. A French driver's license is valid for five years. One can also give French driver's license test in English at his/her convenience.
And before the end of the year in France, you can use a national driver's license.
